Mephisto 2837 – Paul McKenna

I found the right hand side of this far more amenable than the left, where I’m still stuck on one piece of wordplay, though I think the answer can only be one thing.

This was probably the case as of last week, but I noticed the 13th edition of Chambers is now the primary reference for both Mephisto and Listener. So there’s a chance that I’m missing a usage that appears there for the first time and it may be time to order a new big red book.

Away we go…

  1. I thought of an eye pumping water as in crying, which seemed a bit far-fetched but then my (old!) chambers shows ‘a spring of water’.
  2. Chambers 12th edition gives “a spring of water” as one definition of EYE – nearest I could get to “water pump”

I’ve got one in today’s 2838 where I’m wondering if the 13th edition gives the meaning I’m looking for. Must go and invest I guess!

    1. I thought I’d looked that up and you are dead right (and Paul McKenna emailed me as well to ask if I’d read the right part of the dictionary).
