    1. One of the definitions of ‘strain’ in Chambers is ‘a section of a melody’, so by this definition an aria is a collection of strains.
      Thanks for the blog: I needed it to sort a few out. I was puzzled that I couldn’t find the bones TILIA in 11ac, for instance: those pesky abbreviations again!
      I was also puzzled by 12ac where I didn’t see ‘police’ as the anagrind: bit of a strange one that. Fortunately take=r has become automatic.
      Slight typo at 28 Jimbo: CREDANDA. Which reminds me to fix the one you pointed out in my blog earlier!

        I think “police” used as a verb is one of a number of anagrinds that are used in bar crosswords but not in the daily cryptics. Like “r” after a while you just see them – you’ll spot police next time it crops up I’m quite sure
