Interesting solve this one – after about half an hour I had a completely full top half, but precious little poking in to the bottom half. Funny thing is I got myself going again by putting in a guess that fitted the definition and wordplay, which ended up working, but I am still a but clueless as to part of the wordplay.
Aha – a rethinking of the clue and I think everything is crystal clear.
