  1. Hi Jim

re 4dn, it is *(USING CRUDE GREEK HORSE), less the letters of SHOCKING. One assumes the blank at the end of the clue is somehow intended to indicate the removal.. “Shocking blank” or something..

    1. Thanks Jerry. Well spotted! Can’t personally see that —- means delete. Surely a classic case of a clue that can only be reverse engineered from solution to cryptic – not what Mephisto is supposed to be all about?
  2. Surely the blank simply stands for the answer? The complete anagram “shocking ruse de guerre” is rather appropriate. Not a problem if one is familiar with this type of clue.
    1. Yes, it looks like a compound/composite anagram, popular with Azed clue-writing competitors. The answer is indicated in the clue usually by either blanks or the word “this”.

  3. Would you believe I actually got RUSE DE GUERRE from the wordplay? I figured it was a composite anagram and took out the letters of SHOCKING, saw GUERRE and figured out the rest.

On the other hand I invented BO(W)RE to make sure I was stuck in the bottom left a while.

    1. Late reply, but yes I would. Once you’ve got used to compound anagrams, you can learn to notice that the letters in one part of the clue are part of potential larger fodder in another part.
