Mephisto 2733 – Don Manley

I came down with flu last weekend so don’t have a great recollection of doing this crossword, though I do seem to remember dragging myself to the coffee shop at some point. I have writing in two different color pens, so it must have been a multiple sitting solve.

Looking back over it, there’s nothing too too challenging here, and the wordplay is clear across the board, a little surprised to see the definition of 21 has made it into Chambers.

Away we go…

Across
1 BOO,BOOK: Chambers has an Australian owl, but I don’t recall hearing of it
6 STATS: double definition, short for PHOTOSTATS and STATISTICS
10 RANI: Take the 1 out of IRAN, then I(independence)
12 HOP IT: IP in HOT
13 KEDGEREE: KEDGE(one pot-bellied), then EER reversed. Was surprised to be offered this for breakfast in Chicago last year!
14 AO DAIS: O in ADA IS
15 AVISO: SIVA(destroyer) reversing, O
16 INGRATITUDE: anagram of (IN,DAUGHTER,IT) without the H
19 CHALET: anagram of (HOTEL DU LAC) minus LOUD
21 MISAIM: I’S in MAIM, train as in to aim a weapon
24 C,OF,FEES,TALL
27 SOW,FF
28 ROARED: nice clue – if the ROAD goes around RE then “about” has been bypassed
29 NATURIUSM: NA then TOURISM missing the O
30 UNION: double def
31 NIBS: B in SIN reversed
32 PEERY: PEER(fellow), then PARTY(person) without the PART
33 LA,STAGE

Down
1 BRAAIS: A1 in BRAS
2 ON EDGE: anagram of (DEGENERATION -RETINA)
3 BID,ARK,A
4 ORGIA: BORGIA with the top B missing
5 KERNICTERUS: (STRICKEN,RUE)*
6 SHEATHY: HEAT(energy) in SHY(attempt)
7 APHID: if the AP in CHAP was HID, it would become CH(companion)
9 ST,ROUT
11 VESTIMENTAL: ME in TIN in VESTAL
17 BICORNE: IC with BORNE surrounding
18 TIFFANY: double definition
20 ATTAINT: ATTAINMENT without MEN
21 MASH-UP: Sam the pianist (as in “Play it, Sam”) reversed then HUP. I have a fondness for MASH-UP artists, probably the best is CassetteBoy
22 TARSIA: anagram of (LAVATORIES – LOVE)
23 A,L,DOSE
25 OWRIE: (I,WORE)*
26 SORUS: SO(in due course), then RUST(plant disease) shortened

One comment on “Mephisto 2733 – Don Manley”

  1. Harder than last week but as George says, no more than an average Mephisto. There were some well construced clues here such as ROARED

I loved “Play it (again) Sam” from Casablanca at 21D
