Mephisto 2688 by Don Manley

This puzzle was published on the same day that AZED celebrated 40 years of setting (congratulations Jonathan). I don’t know if Don deliberately made it easy so that we could all concentrate on the AZED revue themed puzzle but I raced through it in very short order.

Across
1 ARID – anagram of ARID plus N – from (terrai)N – gives Indra;

  1. It’s fairly easy if you don’t confidently write in DUALIST (from DUARIST) at 14 across. Once I got that sorted out, the right hand side fell into place.
      1. Hadn’t noticed duar hasn’t made it to Chambers. It’s a double-necked guitar, popular with boring prog-rock acts of the 70s.
  2. Yes, this was quite straightforward: I finished it in a couple of goes on Sunday and Monday. This gave me some plane time to tackle the prize AZED, which took an awful lot longer!
    The only thing I didn’t understand was the “term” bit in 1ac, so thanks for clearing that up.
    A tiny point but “may” does seem apt in 9ac because a debt doesn’t necessarily arise from lending.
  3. I would be happy to think that my Mephistos were of a similar level to plain Azeds, maybe a little harder or a little easier on occasion. Some comparison across the plain puzzles of Azed/Mephisto/Beelzebub would certainly be interesting. For experienced plain barred puzzle solvers, I would expect 30 minutes with minimal dictionary use to be about right (always allowing extra time for answering the phone and suchlike activities that time-obsessedfolk on this site get troubled about!)
    1. For a while we did suffer a run of below par Mephistos and some regular contributors blogged to say they would not be doing the puzzle any more because of that.

      The situation was corrected and since then in my opinion Mephisto and AZED Plain have been of about the same level of difficulty within the usual week to week variations.
