This I thought a reasonably difficult puzzle with a number of well crafted clues and a smaller than usual number of starter clues.

I have one query at 1D where I suspect the clue “port that’s a good one” has the word “not” missing.

  1. I was quite busy this week and only got around to solving this puzzle yesterday.

    One meaning given for “bad” in Chambers is “good, attractive (slang, orig US)”.

  2. ‘Endures’ doesn’t work as definition here: that is ‘sticks’ in the sense of ‘persists’, whereas CLAGS means ‘adheres’.
    1. You are perhaps making too fine a distinction here since under adhere Chambers includes the definition: to remain fixed or attached (to).  We always hope that our glued repairs will endure but will concede that the persistence of material that clags is generally unwelcome.
  3. One of the more difficult in recent memory and I did myself no favors by confidently putting in EMBRADE at 18 down without looking to see if it really was a word.

    I think this came up on the crossword centre recently that BAD is a word that can mean its normal antonym (like how BEST can mean WORST) – though I hadn’t heard of the port.

  4. Comprehensive defeat here in my first attempt at a Mephisto for a few weeks. I only got about half of it done even with liberal use of Bradford’s.
    I haven’t had a chance to go over it all in detail yet but I will do, so the blog is going to be particularly useful for me this week. Thanks in advance.
