Mephisto 2676 by Don Manley

A straightforward puzzle that shouldn’t present any problems to seasoned campaigners whilst being a reasonable test for new solvers. I have one query at 13A.

There are no minor sporting personalities, such as cricketer Marcus Trescothic seen a couple of weeks ago, so champions like Larry “horsemeat” Kahn must continue to wait their turn.

Our thanks for all their work during the year go to Editor Peter Biddlecombe and his team of setters Don Manley, Paul McKenna and Tim Moorey. Finally, may I wish compliments of the season to all lovers of bar crosswords.

  1. As a Somerset and England cricket fan, I would uphold MT as a major cricket star — and you, DJ, (like me) coming from one of Somerset’s adjacent counties — I don’t know! And the word was fairly clued too. So while thanking you DJ for all the wisdom and entertainment you bring us, I defend my colleague TM to the hilt. DM
  2. I went to bed on Sunday night with a few clues unsolved in the bottom left corner but worked them out the next day.

For 13ac I think “old lover” is EX and “sign of love” is X (a kiss).

  3. I was travelling a fair bit this week so I did this on aeroplanes with Bradford’s. As I’ve said before I consider Bradford’s a bit of a cheat but somehow this one seemed a little less susceptible to it than some. I wonder if setters sometimes try to avoid synonyms that can be lifted straight from the dictionary’s lists. Not easy! In any event a Bradford’s solve is still very enjoyable even if the experience is different.
Thanks as ever for the blog.
