Mephisto 2652 by Tim Moorey

Another good Mephisto of around average difficulty but with two excellent clues. At 10A the use of Casement and the other wording to evoke thoughts of the 1916 Dublin uprising during WW1 is very clever. At 20A we have an excellent clue for the world’s favourite sleuth. One difficulty at 15D where I can’t find the cryptic – all suggestions gratefully received.

Across
1 ASEPTATE – A-S(EP)TATE; old record=EP=1950s record to snog to; state=STATE!!; unpartitioned fungi cells;

20 SHERLOCK – S(HE)R-LOCK; the man=HE; case of S(laughte)R=SR; strand=LOCK (of hair); reference Holmes – brilliant clue;

  1. I started this last Sunday but then had a very busy week so didn’t get far. My ten answers included BLANCMANGE for 10ac. A “casement” is a moulding, so a moulding’s embellishment could be… never mind. I’ll get my coat.
    My kids enjoyed Legoland too, Jimbo, but I certainly didn’t and will not be returning. A more efficient mechanism for parting a father from his money has yet to be devised. Although I haven’t been to Disneyland…
  2. I think Tim Moorey is showing off his number of great clues for CHAMBRANLE (see the Azed slip from a few months ago)! One sitting, nice smattering of odd words but the wordplay is always solid.
