Mephisto 2,600 by Tim Moorey

I wondered if puzzle number 2,600 would give rise to something a little out of the ordinary and sure enough four clues contain an unclued letter in the cryptic part of the clue but with a standard definition. There isn’t a great deal one can do with the number 2,600 so it was immediately a fair bet that the letters would be MMDC and so it proved.

The puzzle is middle-of-the-road with the missing letters not really making matters more difficult and a good smattering of starter clues. I was interested to see that Flymo has made it into Chambers, one of those trade names like Hoover that become the generic name of the product.

  1. Found this very hard going, but finally got it out after struggling all Sunday afternoon. Treated myself to a new Chambers this week when my 1972 edition finally fell to pieces, so I hope today’s Mephisto will yield more swiftly.

I have to admit that I got holly=mate for entirely the wrong reason, even though it was there all the time in my 1972 edition: I assumed it was a slang term from Buddy Holly, with buddy = mate!

Many thanks for a clear description of the other answers.

  2. I saw the MMDC thing quickle from STRATONIC and DUNSTABLE – this one filled up from the bottom to the top for me, I had some silly mistake originally for GANDERISM but it’s scribbled out now so I can’t see what it was. Sort of wordplay you expect from Tim Moorey, I’m usually piecing together words from the wordplay and looking them up to see if they are right (INQILAB, ASALTI, ROLAG). I was not familiar with FLYMO
