Mephisto 2553 Paul McKenna

Posted on Categories Mephisto
I found this relatively easy. For the second week running I wrote 1A straight in and followed it immediately with 6A and 1D. With both 3D and 16A easy to solve the top half was soon done. I opened up the bottom half with 21A, the obvious 24A, 27A and 32A. The rest followed in good order.

I have a slight query against “boats” as an anagrind at 21A and I’m not sure at 18D that “pass the bottle of smoke” means “eat dirt”. They both have connotations of acquiescence but in rather different usages.

For new solvers (C) = Chambers used to verify part of a clue. Too many starter clues to justify annotating them.

  1. And today is the first time, reclining in my swing-seat, that I have ever genuinely completed a Mephisto with no aids at all; coming in later to check a few wordplays with C I have not changed anything. Thank you, Mr Laws.
  2. I had a good time with this, for a Mephisto on the easy side, but impeccably fair – not to difficult to unravel the wordplay for all those words not in common parlance. Consistently good surfaces too.
  3. My first attempt at a Mephisto and I’m glad all three posters so far have called it “easy”. The Good Lord only knows what a difficult one would be like! I spent forever on it and still didn’t understand half the answers (or how to get them out of the clues). Copy of Chambers looking extremely tattered. May be time for a new one. COW to 3d even though I normally don’t like cryptic defs. So that’s saying something.
    1. Welcome to Mephisto. If you stick at it and use the blogs you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll improve. It will also help you with the daily puzzle. If there’s anything missing from the blog or something you don’t understand don’t hesitate to ask.
    2. I did say easy side “for a Mephisto”… since there’s always some obscure words in the grid it’s careful plugging away at wordplay that gets you there. I rarely finish without aids.
