Mephisto 2550 – Paul McKenna

Posted on Categories Mephisto
I had to admit defeat on this one with two clues unsolved (2 and 21). Speak up if you have the right answers (and possibly the right answers for clues I got wrong elsewhere – a possible cause of being unable to finish). before that, I got about 20 answers before calling for the Chambers cavalry. Both queries now resolved – thanks for the various comments, but especially Bill’s one with full wordplay for both answers.

Across
6 STENGAH = stinger = strong drink. STEN=dart of pain, G=”beginning to go” I guess, and H = hard, but can’t see where the A comes from.
12 A,L(ANNA)H – Alannah = Irish “my child”, Ann/Anna etc = “God has favoured me” – list of First Names.
13 M,EASE
14 LOR(1K)E,E,T
15 CHI(C)LE – chicle = the main ingredient of chewing gum
16 F,E,ART=agency
17 ESCARGOT – GO = success in reacts*
19 OMLAH – M in rev. of halo

28 CLODPATE = (placed to)*
30 KNOSP = a flower bud (German) – rev. of Son=Benjamin in K=kitchen,P=Police
31 APNOEA = lack of breathing = choke. open* in AA
32 ALL,O.T.T.,ED.
33 TREEN – hidden word
34 IMP.,RES.,A
35 HERE,ROS = rev. of SOR=Sale or Return

Down
1 SALC=rev. of clas(s),HOW=who* – maybe! This would involve an indirect anagram of who=that, which isn’t Ximenean. But if there isn’t an indirect anagram, I can’t see how to get the HOW.
2 ?LOH?M – I was tempted to put Elohim, but couldn’t justify it. For the justification, see below.
3 GAR,(d)IAL – g(h)arial=river dragon=an Asian croc
4 SNICK AND SNEE = (cane, knidness)* – I vageult remembered “snickersnee” from “The Mikado”, and this turns out to be the same thing – a fighting knife or the fighting done with it
5 INKLE – two definitions
7 THE,O,C,RAT=hunt
8 NEVER COUNTRY = (current envoy)*
9 GAL,A,GE=(earth) goddess – galage is an old form of galosh
10 A.S,TRON=torn* – an abbreviation for astronomy
11 HEN (vb.)=balk,T
18 SERAGLIO = (Elgar*,1) in SO=”very good”
21 TA?ADA? – searching Chambers several times for TA?A words turned up nothing – stupidly omitting to read the entries for TA?A as well as TA?A???, I missed TANADAR – see Bill’s comment for full wordplay.
23 ULNARE = (Fraulein – if)*
24 NO-ONE,R – commerce=sexual intercourse, a “nooner” being a (US) brief & usu. illicit sexual encounter at lunchtime
26 POOTER – 3 defs – a petit bourgeois, after the character in Diary of a Nobody, an entomologicaql collecting bottle, and shooter of grouse from poot = to shoot at grouse
27 PHEESE = a rub (obs.) – S replaces R in pheere=companion=mate
29 E,POP,T – someone initiated in to the “Eleusinian mysteries”. I don’t know what these are, so I’m not one.
30 KITH = it inside rev. of HK – kith = knowledge, as well as your fiends and relations

  1. 21dn is TANADAR (officer of a THANA or TANA – an Indian police station. It’s in the latest Chambers.

Ihave ELOHIM at 2dn on the strength of “that man” but can’t justify the rest.

Can’t help on the missing “a” at 6ac. I had TWAN(g)+ KAY (=quay=hard (n)) for a while until it became untenable.

Glad to see Mike Laws redressing the difficulty balance yesterday.

  2. 2dn …..God (Elohim) being the artificer (creator), but don’t get the ELO part
  3. Tanadar is in all recent Chambers, see the entry “Tana.”

I too had elohim. I justified it by saying OLE (object linking & embedding, a computer term) is a way of putting something separate into an application… going over, ie elo. Even at the time it looked tortuous, more so now.

Eleusinian mysteries.. all from magic mushrooms, apparently 🙂

  4. Did complete it, with Chambers; agree hard to see some of the wordplays. Can’t comment on clues now, paper has been recycled….
  5. 6A Could “a” be missing from the clue before “…hard, strong drink”?

2D ELO(in),HIM; ELOIN = separate, subtraction of IN clued by “..in going…”

21D TANA,DAR(d); TANA = shrew (second defn in Chambers), and a DARD is a person belonging to any of the peoples who speak DARDIC languages, which (according to Chambers) are spoken in North India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

    1. Also…
1D Rev. of CLAS(s)+HOW; where THAT is given as one of the first definitions of HOW in Chambers
