Mephisto 2414/Tim Moorey – My first Mephisto in a while

Solving time – 25 mins

This is my first post in this blog, and I think I struck it lucky. This was a fairly straightforward
Mephisto for which I had a slight advantage – a couple of answers made easier by the fact that I am Scottish.

Across

1 – NEW(state)SMAN

11 – ALL(hall)OWS – hall=college dinner

12 – ALOD – a + (old)*

13 – EGGS (not sure why)

16 – TE(ll)’D – good Scottish word for “told”

21 – DOUGHS – homonym of “doze”

24 – OMANI – in a mo <=

27 – THAI – thaim is a Scots word for “them”

29 – B(roach)ED – the use of “bed” in the cue threw me a little, as I saw it as a definition

Down

2 – ENSLAVEMENT – m,see tv (-ch)annel*

3 – S(old)AN – old name for a sultan – san. short for sanitorium

4 – TOLED(-o)

8 – NOSIDE -d(end of Murrayfield),is one* (assume “tight” is the anagrind?)

22 – U(r)T-IC-A

23 – SHINDY – Germany (D) replacing Thailand (T) in SHINTY

25 – QATAR (not sure why)
