The crossword was straightforward to solve and submit, but when I came to write up the blog there were a few clues where I could not provide a definitive explanation for the solution (49A, 54A and 40D in particular are not satisfactory – any assistance gratefully received.

40dn – I thought this was just “concerning = about = circa = C”. Didn’t bother me at the time, but it’s a bit of a stretch now I come back to it!
I don’t understand C = “Concerning” in 40dn either, and fear it may be as Andy suggests, though it’s certainly too much of a stretch for me.
I suppose Peter or Benedict would have seemed the obvious choice for the pope’s name in 49ac, but the triple crown came long after the original Peter (the first pope) and (according to wikipedia) the current pope hasn’t ever worn the triple crown, which was last worn by Pope Paul VI. (Do a lot of people know that? I certainly didn’t.)
