  1. 70 minutes for me, so definitely on the easy side, especially when compared to 934! I was thrown off, though, by e.g. ‘from East’ in 6d indicating a reversal in a down clue, by REARLIGHT being written as one word, and by ‘the side’ being the definition for REAL MADRID; that was my LOI, requiring all the checkers. For 52d, for an American solver, you could have explained that ‘wonky’ is an unfamiliar word for unsteady! ‘Policy wonk’ became fairly widespread during the Clinton administration, but I didn’t know ‘wonky’.
  2. 24:25 for me. Like Kevin, I found REARLIGHT as one word a bit offputting, but I wasn’t too worried by “the side” for REAL MADRID (a splendid anagram of RED ADMIRAL which I don’t recall coming across before).
  3. 19a: “swan later”? Not “swan before”? (Unpleasant lake — around it, avoiding swan later UGLY DUCKLING) It was the ugly duckling before it was revealed to be a swan.
      1. Indeed – sorry for omitting this one. Each person’s mind works differently and whilst one clue may have been straight forward to me, others may find it trickier.

        We are requested to avoid putting up solutions to every clue, to ensure that The Times can still get value from the Crossword Club and their premium rate phone lines.
