Jumbo 868

Just for the record, the club site has a new variety of cock-up today – Times2 Jumbo clues for the cryptic Jumbo, and those clues are obviously for a different grid. I thnk this combines two of the “top 10 crossword production mistakes” listed in Don Manley’s book.

There should be a copy on my doormat soon, but I’m not typing 70-odd clues by hand!

Problem fixed by 10 a.m. on Monday

  1. Scan the crossword in, Peter? Post it as a .jpeg, or I can create a .pdf if you prefer.
    1. I see the clues are from Times 2 Jumbo 383, 20 March 2010. No telling where the correct clues have got to.. no doubt it will correct itself on Monday.
    2. I’m happy to provide an individual missing clue, but not whole puzzles or sets of clues when the website people mess things up.

If these mistakes are going to persuade someone at the Times to orgranise better checking of work, people have to be able to say “you spoiled my Saturday morning because I couldn’t sit down with a pot of coffee and the Jumbo” – not “you messed up again so I went and got a samizdat version from a blog”.

There’s also the issue of copyright: putting a copy here makes the whole puzzle available to people who have not paid for it.

  2. Not that News International needs me to worry about its business model, but I worry what is going to happen when the Times puts all its content behind a paywall. They’ve had the opportunity with the Crossword Club to practice on a smaller scale, and it seems they are no better at looking after subscribers now than they were when it began.
