  1. I don’t recall this as being particularly difficult, but then again I don’t recall this. I knew PIRANDELLO, only as the author of “Six Characters in Search of on Author”–which I’ve never read. I think I biffed TORTICOLLIS (tort=twisted, col=neck) from checkers, then spotted the dogs. I didn’t know the Elvis song, although I suspected from ‘The King’ that it was such, and soon enough it became inevitable. Unfortunately, I thought I knew 7d, and put in ‘penfold’ without double-checking the wordplay.
  2. Fairly easy for a Jumbo, I thought. I had a similar experience to Kevin with 16a, 12a and 35a got from wordplay. I also didn’t know the colour BISTRE. I liked OVERTONES, SATIRICAL and GREETER. I was mostly finished in about 30 minutes, but needed another 10 for my last few.
  3. A careless SIT UP spoiled this, but I had to look up PIRANDELLO and TORTIwhatsit anyway. 53:57. Thanks setter and sgh.
  4. FOI GRILL. LOTHARIO was in a recent Graun puzzle with ‘harlot’ also in wordplay.
    Ong’ara,
    Kenya.
