Jumbo 1313

Posted on Categories Jumbo Cryptic
I don’t recall any particular issues apart from 51A which I had to look up. However, overall I think this was a fair challenge.

I liked 53A with the French language from a Francophone country rather than France. I am not sure whether the expressions in 19A and 6D are familiar to overseas solvers, and the football teams in 35D are not the best known.

  1. This took me about 55 minutes, so was a bit harder than the previous couple. A MENSA ET THORO inevitably needed looking up. I don’t think I’ll remember it if it comes up again. CHIEVO was also unknown, and I failed to parse 38d. Thanks. Got it now!
  2. Managed to get this one correct, unlike the 15×15, but had to look up the Latin phrase. I also didn’t know the football team but that didn’t stop me biffing the answer. A solid 101:55 to get there though. Thank setter and sgh.
  3. Also stumped by the Latin phrase. I seem to be doing the Jumbo more regularly now and have resolved to give myself a better stab at it in future by allowing myself a couple of look-ups per week during the solve rather than agonising for too long over a few missing letters. Very pleased with myself to remember VUVUZELA!
  4. Never heard of NOT THE FULL SHILLING & YAH BOO SUCKS but wordplay and google helped, just that Latin phrase. COD VUVUZELA, horn of Africa my foot!
