Jumbo 1173

I could blame the Crossword Championship Finals which were on the same weekend as this one, but that would not be fair – I made a couple of silly errors when submitting this. One I spotted, but the other took some help.

There were a number of unfamiliar words that I needed to check on, but all the clues were fair and the wordplay was clear enough so I don’t think there is anything to complain about.

  1. I did ‘timpanic’ too, and thought that might be my error, although I didn’t bother to check. I also thought that ROUSE might have been it, since I knew nothing about the Ure/Ouse connection; but the checkers seemed to demand it. DNK about Charlton, but no matter; ditto for SATANG. Not knowing TATTIES made it my LOI. I’ve often had a problem solving when the setter spells as one word something I spell as two; this time the reverse came up: I (and the SOED) spell 41d as GOLDENROD.
  2. As I told our setter in the George on the day (he asked how I’d found his Jumbo) this was, for me, particularly straightforward, as I solved it in the time left after completing the 3 preliminary 1 puzzles.

I was at a lunchtime concert the week before where a harpsichordist played a 33d and I said to my colleague that I ought to try to remember the word as it was bound to appear in a crossword eventually!! ‘Eventually’ arrived sooner than I’d expected.

Thanks to Helen and Mr M.

  3. One abandoning vehicle had fun, becoming overjoyed (11)
To me, a train does not quite seem to be a vehicle. It seems to have too many wheels to be a single vehicle.
    1. I would agree that a train is not included in the common usage of vehicle, but the dictionary definition is much wider – for example “any conveyance in or by which people or objects are transported, esp one fitted with wheels” from Collins online, and this would cover a train
  4. Wrote TIMPANIC too.LIMOUSIN took me ages to get, otherwise a fairly gentle Jumbo. (Ong’ara, Nairobi)
