Jumbo 1111 – September 20th – “ME NO UNDER-STANDEE”

Strange one this, where one clue (8D) felt like it took about as long as the whole rest put together. The clues all went in quite quickly, and then I stared at S-A-D-E for ages. A combination of having not heard the word before, and also the slightly wide ranging definition were my come-uppance. In retrospect, probably something you could put in and hope for the best, which is what I eventually did, for lack of better option.

34 PLAINSONG – Lied here is the germanic LIED = song, after (PAL)*, IN = popular.
35 LODGER – may be wrong but I took this to be a cryptic definition making distinction between the LODGE and the GATEHOUSE as different parts of the estate, coupled with a lodger requiring accomodating.
36 AWNING – (captai)N inside A-WING = in flight
39 ELI – E(c)L(a)I(r)

  1. One of those Saturdays where I was definitely on the wavelength of the very ‘friendly’ setter. Only sixteen minutes which must be a PB for the Jumbo. Tippex was applied in one place!

    Thanks to setter and blogger.
