Jumbo 1056 – I never knew Lloyd George knew my father ?

Quick-ish solve, with no nasty surprises, although there were a few where the answers seemed obvious, but wasn’t quite sure on the parsing till much later. Some still not sure on! As usual, a bit of a shorthand write up, so any questions just ask!

  1. 30dn.. cleaning ladies are familiarly known as ~”Ladies who do.” You may have heard the old radio catchphrase “Shall I do you now, Sir?” .. something of a double-entendre 😉 (from Mrs Mopp in ITMA)

  2. 25ac: fulling is a cloth treatment process, using Fuller’s Earth.. lots of old fulling mills in this part of Kent.
    34ac: “It’s for the birds” = “It’s unimportant/trivial”

Enjoyed this crossword, though it seems I unaccountably failed to submit it, not that I ever win anything anyway..

  3. A speedy (for me) 47′, with 37d, 10d, and finally 27ac as LOIs. 46ac was one of those that I must have come across somewhere, sometime, as I got it with most of the LLOYD GEORGE checkers and one or two more; but I certainly had no idea what it meant. 53ac: is RINGER ‘one trying to be put through’ or ‘person on phone’? Thanks for explaining CRIB, which I couldn’t parse.
