  1. FOI STAR-SPANGLED ETC., LOI SECRETED (with a MER at the definition). DNK PYRIDINE, PILEI, NEODYMIUM, ISOGON, which says something about my GK. COD to PYRIDINE.
  2. Yes no problems with this.. no queries, nice comfortable middle-of-the-road effort, thank you setter.
Once again I feel sorry for the Philistines, who having had the misfortune to lose a conflict with the Israelites, have been tarred with an undeservedly pejorative brush forever after.
  3. I had marked this one down as a horror. A crushing humiliation. Coming back to it now I don’t really see why. Admittedly, I have Verlaine’s explanations guiding me through now. Many thanks.
I finished it all green in just under two hours but with quite a few unknown words and wordplays that I had to look up. That doesn’t usually upset me. What bothers me more is not getting words that I do know.
I was still sulking a week later when I did not even look at 1495. See you in a fortnight (or whenever we see the bank holiday jumbo blog)

  4. 30:02. No real problems other than the metal at 18dn, which could easily have been NEOMYDIUM.
