Club changes

I went to print today’s Saturday cryptic and found there is now a button with an option to print a grey grid to save ink. Brilliant! This was a suggestion I wrote to them about and  I imagine many others must have suggested the same. Have other changes been made at the same time? Please post here if you notice anything else that’s new.

  1. For those of you who were unable to print the full jumbo puzzles, we have reduced the size of the grids slightly which should fix this issue. Tested as they also have the grey grid option for the jumbo. Prints nicely, but they seem to also have reduced the width of the column for down clues and not acrosses, which makes the print-out look a bit lop-sided

    Some overseas users were seeing the wrong date displayed – this should now be corrected.

    Finally, we have added the option to search for ‘all crosswords’. This will bring up all the latest puzzles published by The Times, The Sunday Times and the TLS in one convenient list.

    1. Thanks, Peter, I might have thought to look there but usually new statements from the club are so few and far between I rarely bother. Perhaps they should e-mail members of the club when they have something to tell us instead of just posting on the BB and trusting that we will see it? Receiving the message by e-mail could be an option under My Profile. I shall suggest this.
      1. I’m sure we’d all look at the BB if there was more traffic. But the combination of their silly moderation policy and other factors like dateless messages and a tight size limit have killed it off as a way for people to communicate.
        1. Oh yes, the Bulletin Board is completely useless for members’ contributions. I was only thinking of e-mail notifications for messages from the Club admin people.
    2. On my printout this morning, the Across column is reduced in width rather than the Down column – oops, no, that’s the Times2 Jumbo by mistake!
  2. I noticed this too and came looking for comment.. I think the grey squares work rather well, in fact.

    The jumbo grid prints out square on my printer, I have not been able to make a lopsided grid using Firefox..

    I am pretty well certain that 90% of the reported problems with printing grids (not to mention 50% of problems with logging in) are caused by the browser or user, or (to put it more diplomatically) at the least, can be solved by altering browser settings. I wonder if it would be any help if I wrote a brief guide as to how to do that, for ff and ie7/8? Happy to post it here or have it published. It could then be kept as a reference and updated when new problems are encountered..

    1. They’ve put back the “Congratulations, you’ve finished the puzzle!” pop-up when you complete the grid online.
      1. Just as a matter of interest…
        Crosswords are sent to the Times using Crossword Compiler software. By default the java versions of puzzles give you the “Congratulations…” message on completion, so I’d guess it’s just a case of someone having neglected to remove it when the site was revamped as they may have had to reset Crossword Compiler’s upload parameters in the process.
