A puzzle to try

I wonder if I can manage to write a puzzle each week for you to solve? Here’s one to start off with – a thematic blocked grid puzzle roughly in the style that’s used at the Guardian. This one is probably best suited to solvers of fairly long experience. Your final non-essential task is to make some sense of the title.

An American side table

If printing from Firefox, I recommend choosing Print Preview, setting the Scaling factor to 90%, and then using the Print… button – this should get you a single A4 sheet.

If anyone wants to write this up in our local style, give me a shout – otherwise I’ll put up a post with a link to the solution in a few days. Please save any detailed comment about the puzzle until then.

  1. Very enjoyable, and about the right difficulty for me to do over my lunchbreak. Haven’t worked out the title yet though…
  2. This was fun, and sent me scurrying to some interesting websites for confirmation. None had all the entries, though I found 3ac, together with any other thematic answer, a good way of confirming the embarrassingly large proportion I did not know. I can think of some titles linked to the existing one, but nothing yet that has an air of certainty about it. Good fun, thanks!
  3. Just a quick note to say that I believe we have a volunteer to write up this puzzle, and that their report will appear no earlier than the beginning of Saturday, UK time.
