Jumbo 1101 – Saturday 19th July

Apologies for the delay, lost internet connection on Sunday and didnt recover until today. Thought about typing up on the phone, but couldnt really bring myself to do that. The puzzle itself was straightforward. Didnt know HIGH TEST or VICHY, but these were easy to get from wordplay/checkers.
Hopefully this sneaks in late enough not to get in the way of Jimbos daily swan song.

  1. DNK 22d, DNK and CNB (could not believe) 30ac, which disbelief slowed me down a bit. At the end of “Casablanca”, Claude Rains starts to pour himself a glass of Vichy water, until he notices the label (conveniently printed in English) and drops the bottle in the wastebasket.
  2. I found this one a little harder than average and it took me 58 mins with the previously unknown HIGH TEST my LOI.
  3. 31:48 here for a delightful puzzle (which I solved some time ago but have only just got round to checking through the clues).

I didn’t know TWEAKERS = (specifically) “screwdrivers” and the only reference I can find is under “Tweaking” in wikipedia.

I’m pretty sure the “gas” in 26dn is petrol, as in “step on the gas” (the setter has usefully included a question mark at the end of the clue).
