Quick Cryptic 267 by Tracy

Despite being quite out of practice, I found this fairly easy to get into. The left hand side of the grid was a bit slower to click, with 1dn and 2dn eluding me the longest. I do like a good anagram indicator, and was particularly pleased with two used here; one was going to be a quibble until I looked up the precise definition, the other pleasantly unusual.

Only writing up the blog did I notice that there is a preponderance of definitions at the beginning of clues (all but one in the acrosses) but that obviously didn’t make the puzzle seem predictable at the time of solving.

Enjoy…

Definitions underlined.

Across
1 Notorious home recognised by many (8)
INFAMOUS – IN (home) plus FAMOUS (recognised by many).

CHARLES LAMB – anagram (indicated by subtly) of BECHARMS ALL. He was somewhere in the back of my mind, though I’ve not read any of his essays, made all the more difficult by the anagram indicator which I thought was a stretch. In fact, subtle can be defined as “ingenious and elaborate”, or “clever and indirect”.

  1. A nice puzzle that delayed me longer (14 minutes) than some recently but still easier than yesterday’s. I don’t know whether it’s likely to show up in a Quickie, but those aiming to graduate to the 15×15 may find it useful to remember that Charles Lamb’s pen-name was “Elia” so if there’s any mention of “lamb” in a clue it’s worth checking whether ELIA is part of the answer.

  2. I also found this on the easier side with quite a few good anagrams with MACHIAVELLI my favourite.

Not sure what it says about me but at 8 across I thought of tonic in a short drink!

  3. I seem to have developed a bad habit of looking for anagrams where they do not exist. Spent a long time on 2d before 1ac indicated that ‘sign to support’ was never going to be an anagram (party). Quite a friendly QC, with 6d my favourite. Invariant
  4. I missed several anagrams IMITATED and CABINET but I managed to get them from the definition and checkers. My favourite clue was PENCHANT.
  5. Nothing overly complicated today, but I always find it easier when there are lots of anagrams as it’s a good way of getting checkers for the rest of the clues. Hadn’t heard of Charles Lamb before, but it was the only name that made sense given the letters involved.
