This Robert Teuton was not terribly difficult to solve, but I had a few difficulties with the parsing. Our setter does like to remove parts of words, and has thrown in several &lit clues as well.
A vocabulary is definitely useful here. I nearly biffed psittacine, but I had to check Chambers for the correct spelling. I somehow remembered the Japanese temple gateways and the Scottish spider, as well as the Greek ὕλη. The ani is native to vowel-hungry US puzzles, and gave away in a heartbeat. I did have to do a couple of dictionary searches to finish, but nothing major. And you?
