80th anniversary

For those who don’t know yet next Monday (1st February) will be the 80th anniversary of the Times crossword. After a few trial runs in the paper’s weekly edition, Times Crossword No. 1 appeared on 1st February 1930.

I’m sure there will be something special about the puzzle on Monday, and according to the Club bulletin board, there will be reprints of the puzzles from 1 February 1940, 1 February 1960, and 2 February 1981.

There will also be a webchat on the Times website at 1 p.m. (GMT) on Monday. This is being called How to solve the Times crossword but I suspect there’ll be a bit of chat about the anniversary too. Like the previous webchats, it’s open to all, not just members of the crossword club.

I’ll keep you informed of any other special events I hear about.

As you’ll doubtless have noticed, our theme has now reverted to the “London Cityscape” choice to prevent double-takes by new readers.

  1. Times No 1 was not the first puzzle in The Times, as a matter of interest. They put in a couple to test the waters the two previous weekends. (Not many people mayknow that.) DFM
  2. There’ll also be an item on Monday’s The One Show on BBC One just before 7pm, featuring John Grimshaw and Mark Goodliffe
  3. I meant that the program starts just before 7 (never really understood why it does that …)
