50-50 by Phi – an occasional Listener plug

I don’t often mention the Listener puzzle, partly as there are other blogs about it, partly as I’m not currently a regular solver, and partly because of the prickliness of some Listener enthusiasts about any mention of any puzzle before the closing date – including the bloke a year or three ago who insisted that knowing that a Listener puzzle was easy or difficult for me would magically make it easy or difficult for someone else. If he’s reading this, let’s start by saying that I have only looked at the grid and the preamble – I have no idea how difficult this puzzle is.

All I will say is that Phi has produced some super Listener puzzles in the past, and that this one celebrates both his fiftieth birthday and fiftieth Listener puzzle, so I expect it to be a good one, and encourage other occasional Listener solvers to give it a go. Please don’t tell us how you got on until the solution has been published.

  1. I wouldn’t say prickly (I am just a pussycat 🙂 but I definitely agree that it can somehow be Very Irritating Indeed, to be told by anyone that a particular crossword is easy/difficult good/bad/whatever before I have started solving it myself. There is quite a lot of that going on at present, especially with the ST cryptic and the Mephisto, and I do wish it would stop. Crosswords need to be approached in a pristine, unsullied condition ;-0
  2. I’d agree with that, puzzles much more enjoyable if one has no idea if they are easy or difficult, this is the reason for embargo on comments of any sort on various websites which, to me, is absolutely right.
