Mephisto 3047 – Tim Moorey

Each of the three Mephisto setters had a certain flavor to their puzzles, and with Tim Moorey there’s often a dash of sportsball and popular culture. Usually popular culture I am not up on at all, fortunately this time around the wordplay or definition was enough for me to see around the unfamiliar references.

Interesting grid construction leading to several answers with three unchecked letters, which is unusual in Mephisto.

All definitions can be confirmed in Chambers, I’ll only comment on the non-obvious ones. First definitions in clues are underlined.

  1. ….and did it in around 45 minutes on the coach to watch my team get humiliated by Leamington.

Needed aids for RIJSTTAFEL, EPENDYMA, and ARAPAIMA, but the handful of other unknowns were all successfully worked out from the clues.

    FOI LINDA
    LOI INTONACO
    COD NADAL

  2. Enjoyed this puzzle. I did wonder how George would get on with the very UK-centric NETTLES (pedants corner – should be “one who acted” as he’s long retired from the role?). Never come across 11A before so needed some checkers to derive an answer from the fodder.
  3. Two wrong. ABEND instead of UBEND. Not sure ewhy I deleted the U from the anagrist, and MAERI instead of MAERL as I can’t read properly what I found in the dictionary. No wonder I couldn’t work out the parsing! Grr. Failed to parse EDGE too, so thanks for that.
