Mephisto 3073 – Don Manley

Strange solving process for this one, as I started at the bottom and worked my way up. On a first reading of clues I could not get a single one in the top half of the grid, and I think the bottom half was complete before any of the entries poking up into the top half gave me a fingerhold.

Overall I found this a touch more difficult than recent Mephisto puzzles.

Definitions can be confirmed in Chambers and so I will focus on the wordplay in this report.

  1. ….to George, completing the bottom half in around 20 minutes, but needing as long again in the top right, then a later 25 minutes to wipe out the top left. I thought this was pretty tough, especially by Don’s standards, and I had four biffed answers : ACANTHUSES, ARGALI, HOONED, and OMERTA. Thanks to George for his parsings.

I particularly liked the use of “weed” for STALED, which literally led me up the garden path ! Thanks for the stiff challenge Don.

  2. I too found this a bit harder than the usual Don Mephisto, taking out 95 minutes. I liked STALED too – I tried for some time to get EMBACE to work – well it fits a possible wordplay. I failed to parse 5D so thanks for that and thought EPIMER clever. Thanks George and Don.
  3. Agreed, southern hemisphere easier than the north. Good to have something a bit tougher – thank you Don.
