Mephisto 3133: Don Manley

Oh dear, I appear to have been migrated to a new posting system, which removes the colours and the spacing of the automated blog poster that I have been using. I hope it is still readable!

Yet again I am treated to a rather nice grid with 90 degree symmetry and generous crossing against the central region. This was a rather fun puzzle where a lot of the difficulty was in the wordplay.

Speaking of wordplay, since definitions (the most obvious of which is underlined) can be confirmed in Chambers, this report will focus on wordplay.

Away we go!

  1. Broke the back of it unaided in 25 minutes, and cleared up the remainder (7 clues) with Chambers in a further 10 minutes.
  2. Agreed this was a pleasant outing over 35 minutes.
I was especially pleased to see GRAUPEL, a word which I have used when it applies to the local precipitation but which no-one else in my circle believes exists.
    1. I find I have been subjected to graupel from time to time, without ever knowing the word. I suspect that only a precipitation aficionado could distinguish it from sleet, though..
  3. I found this quite hard and ended up with a pink square: PATERINE. Failing to check the anagrist and/or the answer in Chambers before putting in an unknown word in Mephisto? You’ve only yourself to blame.
  4. And Sloanes weren’t necessarily young, and neither were they necessarily well-off. It was more about class, manners and entitlement.
And rase is a bit loose too. Mr Grumpy
