  2. What a sterling effort! Lots to take in here but the statistic that surprises me is that 40%+ of those surveyed reckon their average solving time is in excess of an hour. I certainly don’t get that impression when reading TFTT daily. Maybe I’ve not noticed that a lot of contributors keep their solving times to themselves. I must pay more attention.
  3. And a lot of that 40% don’t finish at all, they just tend not to contribute to TFTT, despite my attempts to encourage them, so that I won’t always feel like the class dunce. I’ve now given up trying. Still, managed today’s Tramp in the Guardian in about 30 minutes although I’m keeping quiet about yesterday’s.
    1. Right, so you reckon a lot of people who filled in the survey don’t contribute to TFTT at all, or rarely. I suppose that must be right. On reflection it would have been useful to have a question on this, do you read but never contribute, contribute occasionally, contribute most days etc? Also to know the percentage or actual number of Anons who filled in the survey.

      I don’t know why anyone would feel like the class dunce but when it comes to solving speeds I must be one of the slowest regulars but then I’ve always been someone who slogs doggedly away at things rather than a star that shines at anything. I’d like to think that some of the speed-merchants might lack some of my tenacity if things didn’t come so easy but I’m probably fooling myself about this!

Not that anyone will probably read this, but I’m going through Saturday puzzzles from 2009 at the moment and two differences I notice between then and now is that there are typically more comments and that the type of comment is rather different. I hesitate to say less elitist now, compared with then, but today’s blog feels more like Ask the Family compared to University Challenge in the old days. The inverted snob – not to mention, the (by the standards of this blog) ordinary solver – in me welcomes this change. And, on a personal note, I miss Barry’s LOL comments but fully understand his feelings. No one wants to be merely the entertainment.

    Have I said too much? Always putting the foot in it.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about now compared with 2009 and I welcome the change too. I’d never have dared to stick around but for one of the the Monday bloggers who gave me a sense of hope when everybody else was finishing in 10 minutes or fewer.
