Times Jumbo 974 – the Easter Monday puzzle

This one initially looked fairly easy, but after I’d completed the top and bottom few rows and the left-hand side, I slowed down considerably, with a final solving time of 23 minutes. I’m blaming too many late nights!

As jerrywh recently commented, these days puzzles tend to have a high proportion of cryptic definitions and double definitions, and Jumbo 974 certainly fell into that category.

  1. 1ac endeared me to this setter straight away – after that he (or she) could do no wrong!

Most Memorable Answer (for all the wrong reasons) 27dn LITTLE GREEN MEN – all because of a controversial highlighting requirement in a Listener puzzle a few years ago. Not that it bothered me, as I got it right 🙂

I’ve just looked it up – Hunt by Samuel, from Feb 2007.

  2. DNF, with 40ac my downfall: I don’t think I’d ever heard of Diwali, and since I was also clueless as to the parsing of the clue, running through the alphabet didn’t help. COD to 26d, although I agree with Helen. 27d: There’s a typo: GREEN=partY
