My woes with Times Crossword Club remain unresolved. Apparently they have been unable to locate any active subscriptions attached to either of the email addresses that I have provided … and to think that I have been a subscriber since they started charging for the crosswords. I have now enlisted the help of our indefatigable PeterB and hopefully I will regain access soon. Thanks to Jon Delfin for sending me a copy so I can do my duty today.
This is a very challenging puzzle using many tricks of the trade but mostly delightful.

Hats off (Oddjob’s hat?) to GOLDFINCH, where the surface even strikes the right note for a Bond reference (I’ve just been reading Casino Royale – none of your namby-pamby, new man stuff for Fleming’s Bond).

The ones that caused me a few problems were were 1dn (my LOI),1a, 21dn (because I had NOISE for a while at 26ac) and 19ac (never ‘eard of it). I also toyed with CHAFFINCH for a time at 27ac.
There seemed to be a lot of removing and/or replacing of letters going on, possibly more so than on an average day.

I also had ROBED at 4 for a while, with vague thoughts of a obe-something that used to be a weight and a belief that it wasn’t a very good clue.
Neither long clues, though obvious anagrams, fell early enough to be much help. Maybe it’s just a dozy day.
I too picked out GOLDFINCH as a goody.
I can’t see what “Not really” is doing in 26.
Today I tried eating my lunch whilst solving to see if it made the experience more fun but it didn’t.
I thought 14 was rather clever.
CoD Goldfinch for me.
I can’t see how 9dn works. Obviously we’re supposed to replace the N in RETAINER with an L but I can’t make the words in the clue mean that. Is it just me?
I made a real mess of this with 6, 9,13 unsolved at the end of an hour. I also had NOISE and INSURE for a while, holding me up in the SW corner. EDOM and SAGAMORE were unknowns, but I guessed them then confirmed them on the internet before proceeding.
