Quick Cryptic 3316 by Pipsqueak

A rare 6 minute solve for me, including parsing. How did you all do?

As usual definitions are underlined in bold italics, {deletions and substitutions are in curly brackets} and [anagrinds, containment, reversal and other indicators in square ones]. “Aural wordplay” is in quotation marks. I now use a Caret sign ⁁ to indicate an insertion point in containment clues. I usually omit all reference to juxtaposition indicators unless there is a specific point that requires clarification.

  1. 06:59 with a fair chunk spent on EVOKE for no readily apparent reason. I love the balance that Pipsqueak strikes: if the answer is more obscure, the clue feels achievable and vice versa. I liked DOWRY very much – just cryptic enough to ponder – while the definitions (e.g. cover up, soldier, indicator, noisy presence) aren’t the first synonyms for the answer I might think of, but neither are they the 11th usage in Collins.

    Thanks to Pipsqueak and Jack!

  2. DNF @ 18 mins. Israel being the missing one, not helped by my misspelling of Samurai. Otherwise very enjoyable. Thanks Pipsqueak and Jack

  3. 07:02. a slowish effort from me – I struggled in the NW corner for a while and biffed a couple to finish things off with EPISODE. this didn’t spark as much joy as some others I’ve done recently – but it may just be me having a bad day!

  4. 06:33 for a Good Day. Wot Plett said, except ROMMEL didn’t detain me but KEEPER did. Many thanks Pip and Jack.

  5. How kind & ironic of « INVARIANT » to have offered me a way « to change » my faux pas! Greatly appreciate any help I can get.
    THANKYOU
